Local Independent Theatres Featured in Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

The Ambridge Family Theatre is one of only three independent movie houses operating in the greater Pittsburgh area. The other two are The Oaks in Oakmont and the Hollywood Theater in Dormont.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Sweeney Todd PosterThe weekend of February 8th we will be presenting the Golden Globe winner, Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

What would you do if a government official abused his office to banish you and destroy your family?

In this dark comedy Benjamin Barker (played by Johnny Depp) is a barber living a contented life with his wife, Lucy (played by Laura Michelle Kelly) and their baby daughter, Johanna, until Judge Turpin (played by Alan Rickman) sets his eye on Lucy. The judge has Benjamin banished on false charges.

Years later Benjamin, calling himself Sweeney Todd, returns home illegally. Finding that his wife has committed suicide and his daughter is the ward of the man who falsely banished him, he sets up shop with Mrs. Lovett, who makes the worst meat pies in London, renting rooms over her establishment to use as a barbershop. Oddly, shortly thereafter, Mrs. Lovett begins making the best meat pies in London as Sweeney Todd wreaks vengeance on London's establishment.

Walden Media, creators of such extraordinary films as The Chronicles of Narnia and Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, have done it again.

Angus MacMorrow is walking the beach one day when he finds a mysterious object. He takes it home, where he discovers it is a magical egg that hatches a 'water horse', the mythical creature that we know as the famous inhabitant of Loch Ness.

He names the amazing creature Crusoe, beginning a journey of discovery and hope as he tries to keep his friend a secret, though he is destined to become a legend.

You remember them. I remember them. When she was little, one of their Christmas albums was our daughter's favorite. Now they're back on the big screen.

David Seville is a songwriter whose career is going nowhere.

Until he meets Alvin, Theodore, and Simon, three chipmonks who have come to Los Angeles after their home, a tree in a tree farm, has been cut down. The three diminutive animals aren't just any chipmonks. They can talk, and can they ever sing! They agree to sing David's songs. In the midst of the chaos and fame their partnership brings them, the Chipmonks and David have to learn what's important, and what isn't.

Nicolas Cage is back as Ben Gates in his second National Treasure movie.

While Ben is presenting new information about the diary of John Wilkes Booth, one man stands up and presents a missing page of Booth's diary that implicates Ben's great-grandfather as a conspirator in the assassination of President Lincoln.

A quest to clear his grandfather's name takes Ben, his family, and his friends to Buckingham Palace (where they break in), the White House (where they also break in), and Mount Rushmore. Ben goes so far as to kidnap the President to learn more about the President's secret book, which is believed to hold the keys to many of the mysteries of U.S. history.

Can Ben clear his family's name? Or will they be known as descendants of one of the men who conspired to murder Abraham Lincoln?
